Zona Velha
The old town of Funchal, Zona Velha, is where you can discover its culture, history and heritage. The entire town displays Gothic and Baroque architecture, the old fishermen's cottages, and pedestrians with small cafes. The old town is quite small and can be easily explored on foot with its artistic beauty. Cape Girao
Located at a height of 580 meters, Cape Girao is the highest cape in Europe, from where you can take in spectacular views of the city. Cape Girao features a suspended glass platform- Skywalk, from where you can discover the Madeira coastline at its best. The cape is a hub for adventure freaks where one can try thrilling activities like paragliding, base jumping and more.
Madeira Botanical Garden
Spread across 8 hectares, Madeira Botanical Garden is one of the biggest botanical gardens in the world. The garden houses more than 2000 exotic and endangered plants of the world. The garden was built in 1960, and since then, it has been one of the most visited places in Funchal. Madeira Botanical Garden has six sections dedicated to a specific variety or class. There is a section for Madeiran indigenous and endemic species, medicinal and aromatic plants, succulent plants, a collection of trees and shrubs, agro-industrial plants, palm trees, and cycads.
Airports Serving Funchal
Madeira Airport, or Funchal Airport (FNC), serves as the main international airport for all flights to Funchal. The airport was later named Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, after the famous soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, in 2016. The airport once had a small runway, but due to a spike in tourism rate, the runway was expanded, measuring 2,781 m. Annually, more than 4,094,000 arrive at Madeira Airport to reach the city or board flights from Funchal.
Regularly scheduled passenger flights arrive and depart from Funchal Airport (FNC). The airports connect Madeira to other airports in cities such as Zürich, Luxembourg, Brussels, Düsseldorf, Munich, and more. Airlines such as easyJet, Jet2.com, British Airways, Lufthansa, etc., operate direct and connecting flights to Funchal. The airport has only one terminal with check-in desks, boarding gates, and baggage belts.
